| Jay Kennett, Pastor
Jay's passions include Creative Worship, the spirituality of
literature and writing, creating just communities, children's faith
development, and weaving. Jay currently serves, as President for the
Eastern North Carolina Association of the Southern Conference, is a
member of the Southern Conference of the UCC Board of directors and
is chair of its Church Development committee. Additionally, he works
as father of his two daughters, "director" of Kennett household
affairs and coach of his daughter's Odyssey of the Mind team.
Jay was born in Virginia. He graduated from Old Dominion University
with a degree in Financial Management and received his Masters of
Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in
1989.
Prior to coming to HUCC, Jay's ministry involved pastoral care,
working as Chaplain and Bereavement Counselor for Hospices for 15
years. In addition to his work as chaplain, he directed the
Spiritual Care and Bereavement program for Hospice and served as a
member of the management team.

Laura Fairfax, Associate Pastor of
Creative Expression:
Laura's passions include creative worship, playing the guitar and
nurturing others to develop their gifts and creativity. She joined
HUCC in 1997 with her spouse Leah. Since 1998, Laura has been the
leader of the music group "Bridges" a group of muscians that lead
worship every third Sunday. In January 2008, HUCC called Laura to
serve as Pastor of Creative Expression. Laura's responsibilities
include worship planning, encouraging creativity, nurturing HUCC's
children, youth and adults to explore their musical and other
talents, as well as continuing to lead "Bridges".
Laura completed her undergraduate education at Lees-McRae College
and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. She graduated from Duke
Divinity School in 1989. She was ordained by the Disciples of Christ
in January 2006 and served Chapel Hill Christian Church (DOC) as
Minister of Music.

In addition to her work here, she works as Associate Vice President
with Chapel Hill Investment Advisors. Laura lives with her spouse of
18 years Leah Spencer in Pittsboro, NC. Leah is a Speech Language
Pathologist at North Chatham Elementary School. They share their
home with their family of 4 dogs, 1 cat & 6 birds.

Mike McKeown; Music Director:
Mike is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Southeastern
Baptist Theological Seminary
(before it was really conservative).
He has a Master of Divinity with Church Music degree.
He spent 6 years as the full-time Minister of Music at Trinity
Baptist Church, in Raleigh,
before beginning a career as a State Farm insurance agent in the
town of Wake Forest.
Mike has been with State Farm for 22 years.
While working at State Farm, he has worked part-time and/or has
served as an
interim Minister of Music at Wake Forest Baptist, Millbrook Baptist,
New Hope Baptist (both in Raleigh), and the First Baptist Church in
Wilson, NC.
He also played the piano at Umstead Park UCC.
Mike has directed choirs of 100 voices and has conducted major
choral works with orchestral accompaniment.
Mike enjoys singing and accompanying himself on the piano, and he
does a mean Billy Joel imitation!

Karen Jordan, Office Manager
Karen's passions are her grandchildren, needlework, reading,
cooking, and working with HUCC children to explore their creative
energies. Karen joined HUCC in 1996 and served the church in a
variety of roles. In 2001, she began serving the church as part time
Office Manager. As office manager, she helps manage the day-to-day
business of the church, greet the community and schedule use of our
much-used building. She is a native of Hillsborough and recently
retired from the University of North Carolina with 27 years of
service.

When she is not at HUCC, she enjoys following her passions and
spending time with her husband Fred, their children and grandchildren.
